Parents of all backgrounds and cultural traditions have expressed enthusiasm for the timely, and timeless, message of this book: Let's appreciate what we have and appreciate where it came from.

How this Little Book Came to Be

This book was inspired by an Eastern concept of kindness that can help people of all ages notice and appreciate the kindness of others. The concept is this: any action that benefits you large or small, intentional or even unintentional is a kindness given to you, and something to be thankful for.

One night, weeks after teaching this concept to her young daughter, author-illustrator Shelley Frost heard her daughter exclaim during dinner, “Thank you, tomato workers! Thank you, lentil bean workers!” (now you know what she was eating for dinner). After hearing this spontaneous expression of gratitude, Shelley realized that even young children could grasp this concept of kindness, and in the process, learn the language of gratitude and respect for others.

Shelley searched for children's books that would help reinforce this concept with her daughter, but found none that would be engaging to her preschooler. Neither did she find any that featured modern-day children in everyday settings. She needed this book. So she needed to create it.

Excerpts

From socks to hawks, the book guides children to see kindness and express gratitude for the gifts all around them, every day. For example, "When I put on my socks, I see the kindness of the people who cut and sewed the material. Thank you, sock makers!"

And, "When I go camping, I see the kindness of the people who care for the forest and its creatures. Thank you, forest keepers!"

And, near the end, "When I see a spider web, I think of how all of us, no matter how small, are connected by a common thread of kindness. Thank you, spider, for reminding me..."

"Fun, entertaining and non-preachy book with a message even toddlers can appreciate! I See Kindness Everywhere has a great message delivered in a sweet, personal way.

"The message is ideal for young children. After reading it, my 3 and 5 year old kids have had a lot of fun thanking cows for milk, trees for oxygen, and farmers for the oats in their oatmeal. How cool, to get kids - many of whom live in a culture of relative wealth and entitlement - thinking about how their socks came to exist, and that someone worked hard to lay the concrete sidewalk they walk on.

"The illustrations are adorable, colorful and interesting (even for parents). Love it!"
