Which charity should Shelley donate to in 2010? This will apply to a percentage of general proceeds up to November 1, 2010. We invite you to take our poll below and help us decide. Please vote only once. Extended descriptions of the charities follow the poll.

  • Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is a centralized warehouse that stores and distributes donated and purchased perishable and non-perishable food items directly to low-income people at community sites; makes food available for other 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations serving the ill, needy and infants; and works to reduce food waste, feed hungry people and raise public awareness of issues related to food and hunger. Feeds more than 98,000 hungry people each month.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States, helping children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.

  • Central Asia Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with the mission to promote and support community-based education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Founded by Greg Mortenson, a climber-turned-humanitarian whose story is told in the #1 New York Times Bestseller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School At A Time, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

  • The Sunshine Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose sole purpose is to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages three to eighteen, whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to the financial strain that the child's illness may cause.

  • The Winter Nights Shelter Program organizes, funds, and operates under the auspices of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County to provide temporary nighttime shelter from mid-October to the end of April for families with children and elders capable of self-care who are experiencing homelessness in Contra Costa County. The program will serve up to 30 persons at any given time; participants must be willing to work toward self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Congregations throughout central and east Contra Costa County provide space, meals, and volunteers. Bedding is provided, and professional staff supervise the shelter 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
